  • Sister City in Italy. Rob Musante gave a report on his recent trip to Milan, Italy, where he visited Alberto Basilico (the Inbound Exchange Student our Club hosted last year) and his father, Mario – who happens to be the President of the Rotary Club of Tradate this year. That club has invited our club to be a “sister club” with them. (Learn more about the Tradate Rotary club at http://www.rotaryclubtradate.com). Mario and Rob talked about the possibility of partnering on a joint project in Kenya. The project would be to help Asanti Sana – a children’s home in Kenya where the kids are orphans, mostly as a result of mother’s with HIV. The website is: http://www.asantisana.org/news/casa-di-accoglienza-robert-children-home-di-mambrui/. Rob is looking for some help in completing an application for a Rotary Global Grant. If you have some experience in applying for and administering grants and want to help, please contact Rob.
  • Warm Coats. Shannon Moxley reported that winter coats are on sale at Macy’s now, and she can buy them for about $16 each. She says we will probably distribute the coats the first week in December, depending on when the orders arrive. If you want to donate and haven’t done so yet, please contact Shannon. You can also donate on-line on the Club’s website, https://tigardrotaryfoundation.org/coats-for-kids/.
  • Thanksgiving lunch at the Senior Center. Kim Morris is asking for more volunteers to help at the Senior Center on Thanksgiving Day. There are two shifts between 10:30 AM and 2:30 PM. This could be a great family activity. If you can help out that day, please contact Kim.
  • Dictionaries. Mike Stone reported that he and other Rotarians have given out dictionaries at three elementary schools so far, and will be giving out dictionaries in the other schools within the Tigard-Tualatin School District in the near future.
  • Salvation Army Bell-Ringing. Bob Davidson sent around a sign-up sheet for volunteering to help the Salvation Army raise funds on December 8th. (If you haven’t done this before, basically we stand by the entry doors at the Washington Square Penny’s store and ring the little bells while standing next to the red collection pots, thereby encouraging busy shoppers to throw some change or a few dollars into the pot. We also greet people and open the doors for them, which is much appreciated). If you would like to help, and haven’t signed up yet, please contact Bob.
  • Holiday Banquet. Bob Davidson also sent around a sign-up sheet for the Club Annual Holiday Banquet on December 6th. This year, we are doing somethings a little different – we are selling raffle tickets for $5 apiece, and members do not need to bring gifts to give away as prizes. You can sign up a friend or spouse on-line on the Tigard Rotary Club website, www.tigardrotary.org. On the home page, scroll down to “Club Payments”, and click on that box. On the following page, under “Item”, use the drop down menu to choose “Holiday Banquet” or “Raffle Tickets”.
  • Holiday Food Boxes. Jacob Pilling reminded everyone that on Saturday morning, December 22nd, we will be filling boxes with food items and then distributing those boxes to families in need. We will meet at the Hudson Plaza. Loni Sanders is the lead Rotarian on this project – contact her for more information.
  • Ten Grands on the Diamond. Dan Murphy reported that the Club made $27,477 on the Ten Grands! Jacob Pilling added that this was $7000 more than last year, and further, that $5000 of that increase was due to the silent auction. He noted that the Club gets 50% of the revenue raised from the auction, vs. 30% of the revenue raised by the program, so we will try to expand the auction-part of this event next year.
  • Darcelle XV Showplace. Jacob Pilling said several Club members plan to go to Darcelle’s on December 15th for the 8:00 PM show. Walter Cole, whose stage name is Darcelle, spoke to our Club in December 2017, and many members expressed an interest in attending a show at that time. Everyone is welcome to join in the fun. Tickets are $20/person.
  • Lunches. Jacob Pilling mentioned that he has heard some negative comments on the variety, quality and quantity of the lunches at Nicoli’s. He asked that members email their comments to him, so he can pass those comments along to the management at Nicoli’s. He said he still thinks the arrangement is working out better, and that some adjustments in the food service are expected over time in response to feedback from Club members.
  • Giving Tuesday. Rose Browning reminded everyone that November 27th is “Giving Tuesday”, and asked that members consider donating to the Good Neighbor Center on that day. Here is the link: https://goodneighborcenter.org/donate/.
  • Election of Club Officers and Directors. Whitney Green and Jacob Pilling reported on the process for electing new officers and directors for the Club. The Board of Directors is made up of the President, President-Elect, Secretary, Treasurer, Past-President, Chairperson of the Tigard Rotary Foundation, and five Directors – 11 members in all. Whitney, as President-Elect, has proposed a slate of officers, but members have the opportunity to nominate themselves or someone else in the Club to serve on the Board. Nominations are open until the election, which will be held at the Club’s December 20th lunch meeting. Whitney sent all members a list of her proposed slate. If you did not receive it, please contact her.
  • Sergeant-At-Arms – Pictionary. Gina Cobb was the Sergeant at Arms. She started out by fining Dan Murphy $25 for making a wise-crack about her. Then she had each table select someone to draw pictures for a Pictionary contest. The illustrators and the words they had to illustrate were: Judy Miller – blizzard; Jordon Leonard – mom; Marty Wine – pizza; Marie Johnson – mask; Mike Stone – dance; Cheron Calder – birthday cake; and Marty Wine – burrito. It was great fun, and a few members were really good at this game and were not fined. Of course, most of us were not quite as visual or quick, and had to contribute $2.00 to the Club budget.
