Tom Anderson announced that two candidates have been chosen to attend RYLA this summer, including Alison Stone, daughter of Mike and Melody.

Cheron attended the District 5100 Conference in Seaside last weekend.  She was inspired by the presentation of the first female president of Rotary, from the Duarte, California club.  The club’s charter was revoked for having 3 female members on its rolls and operated as the “Ex-Rotary Club of Duarte” for 11 years.   The case eventually went to California Superior Court, and to the US Supreme Court which in 1987 held that Rotary could not discriminate.  The rest is history.  Here’s the link to the article about that decision.  http://www.nytimes.com/1987/05/05/us/high-court-rules-that-rotary-clubs-must-admit-women.html

Toraj Khavari from Friends of Bull Mountain Park presented information about the   10-acre park that will be developed on the east side of Bull Mountain.  The land was purchased 6 years ago, but no money was budgeted for its development.  The Friends of Bull Mountain Park have plans to raise the $540,000 needed to install playground equipment to complete the park by fall 2017.  A fund raising event will be held at Blakeslee Winery on June 16.  Tickets for the event are $80 per person and include dinner, wine, and entertainment.  Dan Murphy will emcee the event.  Sponsors will cover the cost of the evening so that all proceeds from ticket sales can support park development.  There are 120 tickets available.  Contact Toraj at 503-706-3548 for tickets and more information.  An installation of basalt rocks at the park will also provide naming opportunities to support the project.

Exchange student, Isha attended the District 5100 conference and taught an Indian folk dance to the inbound exchange students.  Isha’s time in Tigard is nearing an end, and she will be returning to India on June 14.

Short Term exchange student, Logan Jett will be going to Belgium for the month of July, and bringing his host brother to the US for the month of August.

Cheron noted that the incoming leadership will be the youngest group of leaders in the history of Tigard Rotary.  With this in mind, the club will be undertaking a Visioning project to prepare for the coming decade.  The last Visioning exercise was done in 2009, and set the tone for what the club was to accomplish over the next several years.  Cheron asked for 20 – 25 volunteers to be involved in the visioning project that will be held this fall.  She showed a video of Simon Sinek’s TED talk, How Great Leaders Inspire Action.  In the video, Mr. Sinek makes the case for answering the question “Why?”  In short, leaders need to communicate from the inside-out instead of the reverse because people do business with people who believe what they believe.
