The Tigard Rotary Club hosted the 51st Annual Scholastic Achievement Banquet onMay 3rd, honoring Tigard High School students. Dan Murphywas the Master of Ceremonies,Jim Strickler gave the Thought for the Day and led the Pledge of Allegiance, andSteve Schmitt presented a short overview of Rotary. Our Guest Speaker was State Representative Margaret Doherty, who spoke about what “success” means. Margaret talked about success in terms of maintaining long-term relationships with friends and associates, helping other people, and loving the work that you do. She ended by sharing a quote by Maya Andelou – “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”

Then Tigard High School Principal Mark Neffendorf, and the Tigard-Tualatin School District Superintendent Ernie Brown, along with Steve Schmitt, handed out the certificates, while Ed Murphy took photos of all the students. Congratulations to all the students!

Rotarians and their guests in attendance included Jim Strickler, Dan Murphy, Bonnie Conger, Conrad Pearson, Mike and Anne McCleskey, Steve Schmitt and Nancy Andre, Cheron Calder, Rob Musante, Ken and Carol VanDomelen, Marland and Marilyn Henderson, Bob Akamian, and Ed and Dana Murphy. In addition, several Rotary Club members sponsored tables (and in the case of Cliff Elling, three tables!). Thanks to all the sponsors, and to all the Rotary Club members who attended this event. Special thanks go toJim Strickler and Dan Murphy, who organized the event. And a great big THANK-YOU goes out to Rachel Edwards at THS, who worked with the teachers to choose the students, and handled many of the logistics of the event.

Mark Neffendorf made the following statement in the program “One of the annual events we look forward to most is the Tigard Rotary Achievement Banquet. This activity is unique in its recognition of students who excel in a broad range of academic interests. Its long tradition is a testament to its importance to Tigard High and to this community.” Likewise, Steve Schmitt stated in the program “For 51 years our Club has observed the efforts of deserving students who have distinguished themselves in high school and beyond. We are proud to continue this tradition and honor the recipients of 2015.”
